October practice
Lectio Divina / B.R.E.A.D.
A simple way to linger with a short Gospel or Psalm passage until a word or phrase goes with you into the day.
Pick a short passage. Read it out loud when you can. Do not rush. The goal is not coverage. The goal is encounter.
- Be Still (Silencio) Slow down. Put the phone away. Take a few breaths. Ask the Spirit to meet you in the Word. Sit until your mind is less noisy than when you sat down.
- Read (Lectio) Read the passage slowly, preferably out loud. Notice words or phrases that catch you. Read it again. Do not analyze yet. Just listen.
- Encounter (Meditatio) Stay with what stood out. Turn it over. Ask: What might God be saying through this? Where does this touch my life right now?
- Apply (Oratio) Talk to God about it. Confession, thanksgiving, asking, surrender. Respond honestly. Write a sentence if that helps.
- Devote (Contemplatio) Rest. Stop striving. Sit with God without needing more words. Carry one word or phrase into the rest of your day.
Practical tips
- Ten to twenty minutes is enough. Consistency beats intensity.
- Gospels and short Psalms work especially well.
- If your mind wanders, return gently to the passage. That return is part of the practice.
- Journal one line: the word or phrase you are carrying, and why it matters today.
